Selecting Window Treatments
Many new homeowners get confused by choices in window treatments but help is on the way. Just consider these tips when choosing your window coverings.
Consider the function of each window treatment.
Do you want to block light? So you want to frame a view and have some UV protection as well? Consider the room décor and think of the window treatment as an accessory.
Also remember that many window treatments such as blinds and shades can be accompanied by a curtain, valance, or a combination of both.
Consider these window treatments.
Roller shade: The basic purpose of this treatment is room darkening. Usually opaque, it can descend all the way down for total darkness or rolled all the way up for loads of light. There are also see through roller shades and screen materials available. It's available in all fabrics and colors, and don't worry—yesterday's snap-tight roller mechanism has been greatly improved.
Roman shade: The roman shade is a fabric window treatment which is raised and lowered in horizontal folds similar to a stage curtain.
Balloon shade: This fabric window treatment features a scalloped bottom edge and draws up in soft, billowy folds. It operates by means of a series of tapes with rings, through which cords are threaded.
Pleated or cellular shade: These can be raised from the bottom or lowered from the top or both termed top down bottom up. The term "cellular" refers to the shade's honeycomb type construction: It's made of small cells, or pleats, that insulate as they diffuse or allow light.
Plantation shutter: A "built-in" shutter, this is placed inside the window frame. Its louvers can be tilted open or closed by manipulating a knob to let in as much light as desired.
Horizontal blinds: These come in many sizes, styles, colors and are made from many different materials. Wood blinds come with 2 ½ inch slats, 2 inch slats and one inch slats. Aluminum blinds come in 2 inch and 1 inch slats and a ½ inch slat called a micro blind.
Vertical blinds: These blinds hang vertically from windows or sliding doors; individual panels tilt to allow light in or slide to the side to completely open.
