Many people love the fresh, clean lines that are associated with contemporary décor. A certain richness yet simplicity are what go along with this particular décor. With contemporary, you will find beautiful art, sculptural furnishings, and both bold and neutral colors. Many people such as artists and architects are attracted to this style of living. They appreciate the shape, form, and lines that are found with contemporary décor. Typically, you will find very few accent pieces with this style. What you do find in the way of accessories and art are usually on large scaled, adding both architectural and textural interest. Most often, contemporary décor also has a set palette that used black and white, a blend of neutral colors, bright colors and geometric designs, or sometimes a little of each. However, the one color that is usually the base for all palettes is black. For the line of a contemporary room, you would find interesting curves and shapes. You may see extremely tall windows, uniquely shaped ceilings, and sculpture and paintings that are geometric or complex. If you are interested in creating your own contemporary décor for your home, you need to remember some guidelines to help you achieve your goal: Every element has its own space. In other words, if you have a large statue, it will stand off by itself. If you have a beautiful painting, it would not be grouped with other paintings but set on the fireplace alone. Appreciate the architectural elements of the structure. You will find that many loft apartments have exposed ceiling pipes or bricks in the wall that are cracked or broken. In fact, in many contemporary spaces, you will discover a sense of being in a museum or factory. Do not be afraid to make bold statements using accessories and furniture. For example, if the color red or yellow is your passion, use it. Have a red sofa with yellow throw pillows or vice versa. Stay away from anything small, cutesy, and with soft, pastel colors. Never use lace, ribbon, ruffles, traditional furniture, floral designs, or anything with carved details. Instead, go with sculptural things. Your furniture should have clean, smooth lines. If not leather, choose fabric that is bold, black, or in the neutral zone colors. Typically, contemporary décor would include fabrics such as wool, silk, jute, linen, and cotton. Contemporary means things are clean and sparse. Countertops and floors should be uncluttered and neat. When it comes to lighting, you want fixtures that make a statement, something different and unique. Again, choose clean lines, metallic, and perhaps some splashes of bold color.
